This particular piece of equipment can be used in home as well. I am designing a mid-level network with a router, a switch, a baracuda firewall (for email servers) and a watch dog firewall for everything else. The configuration of this piece of equipment can get rather complicated at times especially if you do not know anything about cisco interfaces. This router is not like your typical home router. This is what they use in the industry and is very robust. But once you get past the configuration part of it, it is a good way to go. If you have one of these and you cannot get it to work or get it configured properly, let me know and I may be able to help. The thing that i didnt care for was the CLI (Command Line Interface) and that is because I had all but forgotten how to use the CLI. Overall this would be the best way to go. I would say that if you have a connection that is 100mbps or less you would be ok, if you have anything much faster than that, then upgrade.Read full review
Purchased the Cisco 2612 router to replace all of the dinky plastic home wireless routers I have tried. The 2612 does NOT have wireless embedded in it but there are cards that can add that capability. In my personal experience, small ADSL routers cannot handle anything more than light internet duties like email, social networking, etc. If you need VPN, encrypted internet tunneling, serious work-at-home connection, in addition to simple web surfing get the Cisco 2612 router and configure it for your needs. Capable of handling a small business, the reason I bought it was to perform multiple things at the same time. Funky home routers fall flat when it comes to a matchup of processor power and configuration options.
